The Toyota 7 was a group of Toyota race cars that raced frlm the late 1960s to 1970 after the recent boom in motorsports during the 60s and 70s following the Can-am race series in North America. Toyota partnered with Daihatsu and Yamaha to create a race car ti race in the Japanese Group 7 races. At The time the can-am cars were not only faster than the F1 cars of the time but also provided more monetary gains with wins. The race series was dominated by Bruce Mclaren’s Mclaren cars, driven by himself and 1967 F1 world champion and fellow kiwi Denny Hulme. This drew Toyota to team up with Mclaren to help design their car. The car became very successful in Japan winning 9 races from 1968-1970. It was powered by several engines made by Yamaha all DOHC V8s ending with a over 1000hp (the most powerful racecar of the period) twinturbo 5L V8. It was raced by Minoru Kawai, Hiroroshi Fushida (first Japanese national to compeate in F1 and lemans), Shihomi Hosoya, Harukuni Takahashi, Vic Elford ( F1 driver, 1967 BRSCC champion, 1967 and 1973 lemans champion), Hiroyuki Kukidome, Sachio Fukuzawa, Kiyoshi Misaki (1991 lemans winner), Yoshio Otsubo and Mitsymasa Kanie. The Toyota 7 project ended after the fatal accidents of Sachi Fukuzawa and Minoru Kawai.
