@imjustbrighton: Brighton is witnessing one of its biggest days of protest. Far-right group South East Patriots began gathering at Brighton train station from noon, marching through the city centre calling for stronger border controls, enforcement of immigration laws and deportation of illegal immigrants. Their speakers included UKIP leader Nick Tenconi and Siobhan Whyte, mother of murder victim Rhiannon Whyte. They were met by thousands. More than 20 anti-racist groups united under the Carnival Against Fascism, gathering from 11am on Queens Road to block the march. Stand Up to Racism held a separate counter-protest outside the station. The city centre came to a standstill. Fighting broke out on Queens Road between the two sides and was broken up by officers. Sussex Police made the first arrest before the march had even started, with a man taken into custody on suspicion of a public order offence. A second arrest followed after the fighting. Fatboy Slim, Norman Cook, Brighton’s most famous resident, was spotted among the counter-protesters and played a free set on the streets of the city, turning Queens Road into what witnesses described as a carnival atmosphere despite the tension. Council Leader Councillor Bella Sankey said this week: “My message to them is simple: don’t come. Your message of hatred is not welcome here.
