@moonfervent: The Harpy Eagle, Harpia harpyja, is among the most powerful and largest raptors in the world. They are famously known for their immense rear talons, which can reach up to 5 inches in length - rivaling that of a Grizzly bear! 🦅 These special talons are some of the animal kingdoms most formidable weapons. Razor sharp and built for gripping onto prey, they are capable of generating an estimated pressure of up to 500 pounds PSI; enough to break bones upon impact. Harpy Eagles are predominantly ambush predators, diving through rainforests at up to 50Mph to snatch unsuspecting prey - they can lift animals weighing up to 9Kg right out of trees (such as sloths, primates, other mammals, and even other birds)! They are found in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, more specifically: the Amazon Basin - Brazil, Ecuador, Guyana, Venezuela, and Panama (fun fact: they are the national bird of Panama!). They build nests in the upper canopy of the jungles, favoring the highest emergent trees for a perfect vantage point. On a personal note, Harpy Eagles have been one of my all time favourite animals since I was very young, thanks to childhood shows like Go Diego Go and (my personal hero) Steve Backshall’s Deadly 60. :) 🌴 #eagle #harpyeagle #bird #animals #fyp
