I just went there - it seems like this may all be a hoax - the 1800s account may not have even happened and was published much, much later - the tour guides were nice but they contradicted each other and seemed to fabricate stories that aren’t in any of the accounts - it’s a fun story, also very similar to Gef the Mongoose in the UK (look that up - fun like this but also a hoax)
