If massive frontier models starts to become locked away probably the open source community will shift toward efficiency from smaller models. Researchers will focus on making smaller and more specialized models that are highly capable and that don't hit the frontier alarm bells but still outperform general purpose models for specific tasks. But my it’s just a speculation the progress is moving so fast and so unpredictably that who knows what is coming next. The innovation is coming also from the open source community with their fantastic ideas. Opensource is also crucial and invaluable for the technological progress.

Are you sure that was their response? It doesnt help them at all. Obviously all those models can be jailbroken, the difference is that this model is capable of much more than the others

Generally the Chinese are just two months behind. Wait for 2 months and you have will have an equally capable model that is open source for 1/100th of the price. But the US government could ban it just like they are doing to Anthropic. But the rest of the world will use it.
