Small correction! The s in front of s7 actually refers to shock resisting! I don’t feel too bad about it though because steel classifications are really confusing and inconsistent, maybe I’ll make a video about that later. Guys I don’t wanna be a freak, but tool steel is classified under ASTM A681 specs, which basically gets most of the information from AISI, so in the steel business, S7 is one of the most inexpensive tool steels you can buy, S refers to shock resistance, the A681 designation for air hardening steel is A series such as A2, this theme continues with other tool steels such as M2 meaning molybdenum, which is the primary alloying element, commonly used for high speed tooling. W series is water quench, O series is oil quenched, P standing for plastic mold/plastic tooling, D series standing for Die tooling. What’s cool about decarb is you can reverse the process by creating a carbon enriched environment, surround your steel in foil and put paper inside the foil with the steel, it will eat up the oxygen and leave behind carbon. The surface of your steel will now be impregnated by carbon. Anyway if you want extremely expensive steel try buying a re melted steel, these are steels essentially melted twice through VAR or ESR technology, it is generally praised for its application in areospace, JK cleanliness tests, and high polish ability, you’ll find P20 remelt and 420 remelt all over. If you want steel that’s easy to harden, consider using somthing called maraging steel, this is a compound word meaning “martensite” plus “aging” to harden these type of steels, you simply bring them to their austinitizing temperature, and then turn the heat treat furnace off. That would be a steel that “wants to harden” as in most cases, the reason we quench in the steel industry is to lock in the austinite, transforming it to martensite, should normal steels be left to cool slowly, they will return to ferrite, losing all its austinitic properties. This is the phase changing between Body centered cubic, face centered cubic, and body centered tetragonal.

yep, made a knife of some mystery leftover - i noticed what it was right after blunting a center punch in one strike. Days of ginding on that knife but it holds an edge like nothing else. Literally sharpened it once in the 5 years since i made it

Ironically, you’re smacking shock resistant steel with a hammer. So in your case, yes it should be hard to manipulate, which is by design. For funsies, you should buy a peice of H13 or H11, these are hot work tool steels meaning they retain hardness at hot temperatures. So in theory they should be extremely difficult to manipulate.

You should work on them more to make good wood carving tools. As a blacksmith i would assume your gonna be working with wood too and if its a good quality steel that lasts long you should make wood carving tools so that you have wood carving tools (that you made) when you make handles for your smithing projects
