I just finished reading your book and have to say that your insights have genuinely changed my life. It’s very hard when you are told your identity is invalid and sinful from birth as a highly impressionable child with a still-developing brain. That lead to me believing I could never be my authentic self because that self was useless and fallen, made perfect and saved/sanctified only by Christ. For me, this messaging and psychological conditioning while growing up has manifested in extreme and debilitating anxiety as an adult and even panic attacks in the presence of authority figures where I felt I had fallen short in some way. Anyway, I am so grateful for the clear way you describe these mechanisms. I am still integrating and deconstructing everything and fear certainly floods me from time to time— for example, how am I going to raise my kids? If it was how I was raised, it would be for them to be “saved from Hell” as soon as possible because God forbid I let my kids be eternally tormented without giving them an opportunity for “salvation.” How do I encourage them to seek their own truth and community? Am I unintentionally leading them “astray” if I don’t impress them with fear and that they need to be saved from eternal damnation the way I was raised? Anyway, more food for thought and I’d be curious to hear your take on what you believe to be the best way to raise kids in a way that respects their autonomy and authenticity.
