Hello. Today, I’m going to talk about the gothic fiction. First of all, I will explain it’s origins, then I’ll presen it’s main characteristics and finally we’ll see some examples.
To begin with, gothic fiction is a literary genre that appeared at the end of the 18th century in england during the romantic period. At that time, the age of enlightenment emphasized reason, science and progress. That’s why gothic was developed, and focuses on emotions, imagination and irrational fears. Also, the word « gothic » refers to medieval architecture like abbeys and castles wich were places that ispired it’s dark and mysterious atmosphere. The first gothic novel is considered to be « The castle of Otranto » written by Horace Walpole in 1764 since it introduced typical element of this genre such as haunted castle and supernatural events.
Moreover, the setting of a gothic fiction is essential. Indeed, it usually takes place in the past, in dark, isolated and mysterious place like castle or old houses to create a threatening, oppresive and gloomy atmosphere. There is often the use of night, storms, fog and strange noises to create fear and suspense. Also, the presence of supernatural is important, we can find ghosts, monsters, vampires or unexplained phenomena to makes the story more disturbing. Sometimes, the supernatural is real and other times, it’s metaphor linked to the psychological state of the character. Thoses elements are used to make the reader fell uneasy. Besides, gothic fiction focuses on psychological conflict. The caracters are often isolated, tormented or obsessed, they experience mental suffering since themes like madness, guilt, violence and inner duality are very common giving the fear a psychological aspect. Then, gothic fiction deals with the theme of transgression as the stories often break moral, social or scientific limits. They question the dangers of power, knowledge and ambition while exploring what society is afraid of like death, religion and the unknown. Finally,
