@newcoredespite: GOLD SMELTING & REFINING: THE FINAL STEP IN GOLD RECOVERY Following my previous posts on Crushing, Closed-Circuit Grinding, Ball Mill Mass Balance, Hydrocyclone Mass Balance, Carbon Adsorption, Elution, and Electrowinning, We now reach the final stage of the gold recovery circuit: Gold Smelting & Refining. • At this stage, Gold bearing Cathode sludge recovered from the Electrowinning cells is filtered and dried to reduce moisture before being blended with fluxes such as Borax (Na_BaO, 10H2O), Silica (SiOz), Soda ash (NazCO3), and Fluorspar (CaF2). *The mixture is then charged into a Smelting furnace operating typically between 1,100°C to 1,250°C temperature. The Primary Objective is to separate valuable precious metal (Gold) from impurities, producing a molten doré alloy (Au) while directing Gangue materials and contaminants into the slag phase. *A well operated Smelting circuits can achieve Gold recoveries exceeding 98%, with doré bars commonly containing 85 to 98% combined Au + Ag. The doré bars are subsequently refined through processes such as the Miller Process (~99.5% Au) or Wohlwill Process (~99.99% Au) to produce High Purity Bullion suitable for the International precious metals market. ! This is one of the most sensitive stages in Gold processing. • Furnace Temperature control • Flux selection • Slag Chemistry • Metal Accounting • Molten Metal handling 💈All those must be managed by experienced personnel to maximize Recovery, minimize precious Metal losses, and ensure Operational safety. In Gold Processing, the value delivered to the refinery is ultimately determined by the discipline applied throughout every preceding Unit Operation. #GoldProcessing #MineralProcessing #Metallurgy #ProcessEngineering #Africa
