while it also isn't free Clip studio paint has a one time $50 payment or the more expensive one. if you're okay with splurging a little, CSP pro is great. I used to use krita until CSP.

While it is not free, Procreate is a one time $10 fee. It has been my go to for 5 years! I got a refurbished IPad for like a 10th of what a new one is so if y'all are interested in Procreate look into that ❤️

Also: Affinity Studio substitutes Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign and is free. It belongs to Canva, and if you have a Canva Premium account Affinity has some more perks to offer.

I love Blender, but telling a normal/civilian designer with no 3D experience that it's a replacement for After Effects is like when Apple says you can shoot a feature film with an iPhone. Someone probably can, but odds are it ain't you unless you want to put in a few years of training.

Affinity is a GREAT free alternative to Adobe's graphic design suite. Photo editing, Vector Graphics, and Layout tools! (it does not have the organization tools if Lightroom/darktable, nor the video editing of premiere/Resolve, however) - it also supports PSD import/export so many existing workflows still work!

I've been loving Affinity, it's great as an alternative to Ps, Ai, and Indesign. Workflow transition from Adobe hasn't been difficult in my experience. Audacity and Tracktion Waveform are free audio editing tools, with the latter (like Reaper) intended to provide the functionality of a digital audio workstation

i desperately want the user friendliness of procreate to be on desktop programs 😭 i find illustrator and photoshop so FRUSTRATING to use. illustrator also keeps HIDING THINGS and i have to google where in the drop down menus basic things are.

Also, imo, Krita is way too unreliable and has too large of a learning curve to be someones first free art program. If it is the first drawing program youve ever tried, FireAlpaca is the best. It has a gif animating tool, and the brush imports actually work instead of crashing the software like it does in Krita. Krita is NOTORIOUSLY buggy.

I will say from experience, OpenToonz crashes quite frequently, so I would reccomend Tahoma2D instead. It's a fork of OpenToonz with a more modern UI, more frequent updates and less crashes!

Affinity, though it is owned by Canva now, is a one time purchase model (like Adobe used to be) for their versions of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

I ditched Adobe years ago for Affinity. It’s now become free since it was bought by Canva so is an even better option than ever. Highly recommended.
