Long before packed stadiums, television broadcasts, and World Cups, the Maya and the Mexica were gathering around ball courts throughout Mesoamerica. Entire communities came together to watch. The games carried meaning, pride, identity, and ceremony. The ballgame wasn’t just entertainment. It was part of the culture. When I watch Mexico during the World Cup, I see families gathering together, faces painted in the colors of the nation, entire cities united behind one team, and I can’t help but wonder if we’re witnessing an echo of something much older.
