@pattyunfinished: I’ve had these squishy ankles for as long as I can remember. By age 12, people were already telling me my ankles looked swollen. For decades, I heard comments, suggestions, and assumptions. Lose weight. Drink more water. Exercise more. The thing is, they always looked this way. Now I know that for many women, persistent swelling-looking tissue, puffiness, or a loss of ankle definition can be a sign of lipedema. Not everyone with lipedema has this symptom, and not everyone with ankles like mine has lipedema, but it’s a clue that often gets overlooked. I spent years thinking I just had “big ankles.” Looking back, my body was trying to tell a story long before I had the words for it.
