When I got divorced I had to have my (ex)husband approve my request to separate our joint account even though it was originally my account that he was added on to. The year, you might ask? 2020

I purchased a house in 2017. I financed it and put money I had saved down as a down payment. I put my husband in the deed. His name was first on every document during closing. I was livid.

We each have our own account and one shared account for mortgage and house expenses.

Added my husband to my account, they wouldn’t let me report his card as lost but he could cancel mine. In 2020

So they opened an account without talking to him and it was in his name. Is that not fraud?

My grandfather died in ‘90. I don’t remember the exact details, but there was a big issue with the bank account that was for her small business. He wasn’t even on the account, it was her business account for her sole proprietorship business that only had her name attached to it, but the bank froze it and wouldn’t let her access it for awhile when he died because they were trying to lump it into his assets for the settling of his estate.

When I got married in the 1990s I was very independent. Had a career, a little nest egg, owned my car, lived on my own. He slowly chipped away at all that and I didn’t even realize it. We used my savings towards a downpayment for a house we jointly owned. The next car was in both names. Convinced me to stay home when the kids were little. Fast forward 14 years: it took 2 years of scrimping to escape with the children. He got the house. The career I had no longer existed. Started over but at least I was free and safe

2017. My fifth baby. FIFTH. The hospital would not tie my tubes without my husband’s permission.

I mean, women couldn't even hold sole bank accounts until 1972 or 73, so I'm not surprised.

Oh this isn’t even old. I had an account for 10 years before I was married. It was just an account I used for a few bills. I rarely checked it. I added my husband to it after we were married. A few years ago I forgot my password and they asked me details about transactions. I didn’t know. They told me to check my statements. I said I hadn’t gotten a statement for years. Turns out they were sending them to my husband and addressing them to him only.

Just bought a car. My husband was with me. We both signed and they had him sign in the line before mine. So his name looks like the primary. This was this year.

Bought a BMW, in my name. My husband took it in for service, ONCE and they changed the name on the account to his. When I would try to make any future appts, they would refer to it being his car. They would not change the name on the account. Obviously, we never went back to that dealership- 2024

When my mom was divorced in late 80s she couldn't get a credit card. Sears was the only one that would give her a credit card.

My mom started modeling as a teenager in the 1960s. She married my dad and had to put her money in a joint account bc they were married. She said he loved it that she had to get him his permission TO SPEND HER OWN MONEY. We can never go back

True story , 2026. I had my accounts and added my husband when we married in 2014. As soon as that happened he became the head of all my accounts. Trying to myself from him from my original accounts have been fruitless

Even with the paperwork to show our divorce and refinancing and transferring ownership of our house to only my name, the home insurance wouldn’t take him off until he called (he never did), got a new insurance eventually and the old one was automatically cancelled when my bank only paid the new insurance the following year. This was just a few years ago.

Always have your own account. I have never added my husband or any man to my bank account. It's mine. I will not have anyone highjack my bank account and put me back at square one. Don't add family either. The moment some people get pissed at you, they will drain your account out of pure spite.
