I think the point is you're literally not even allowed to have a positive perspective of Russia, and this is exacerbated by the media because they're still stuck in a cold war mentality. You probably get weird reactions from just saying you visited Russia.

You’re right about income inequality, but there are 100% more modern and comfortable cities . There are also towns more representative traditional old Russia nether vestern lifestyle. There are islands, there are Muslim regions with their culture, there are people with nomad lifestyle in the North. And yes , there are very poor and even abandoned cities. Why people only counts luxurious cities as normal is weird

Comparing Moscow to New York is unfair, since NYC is at a disadvantage here. Most big companies - oil, gas, rare earth, aluminium, titan etc, are registered in Moscow, so that is where they pay their taxes - from all of Russia in one city.

I’m from Russia not from Moscow and I can say it’s beautiful. Of course the capital is much prettier than the other cities because it was made for tourists and for the government. But if you go in other cities you will see that the vibe is the most impressive thing about Russia

I live in a SMALL country (comparatively) and our biggest city features regularly on the top 10 Global Affordability Index because of the disparity between median wages and house prices, and yet almost every single other part of the country is NOT like that
