@realparmenion: In 1014, after defeating the Bulgarian army at the Battle of Kleidion, Emperor Basil II reportedly ordered thousands of captured Bulgarian soldiers to be blinded. According to medieval accounts, he left one man in every hundred with a single eye so they could guide the others home. When the surviving soldiers finally reached Tsar Samuel of Bulgaria, Samuel was devastated by the sight of his mutilated army. The loss shattered Bulgarian morale and demonstrated the overwhelming power of the Byzantine Empire. Medieval sources report that Samuel suffered a stroke shortly after witnessing the survivors and died two days later, in October 1014. Although Bulgaria continued to resist for several years, Samuel’s death weakened the kingdom’s leadership. In 1018, Basil II completed the conquest of the First Bulgarian Empire, bringing it under Byzantine rule.#byzantine #empire #basil
