@dr.katie.h: Most people picture the emergency department as one big room full of patients. In reality, there are multiple different areas running simultaneously, each with its own challenges. Before every shift I check the roster to see where I’ll be allocated. Tonight it could have been overseeing the whole department, supporting junior doctors, managing short stay patients, troubleshooting admissions… or running resus and trauma. Tonight it’s resus and trauma. The area where some of the sickest patients in the hospital arrive, often without warning. Equal parts exciting, challenging and humbling.
