I visited Suriname and stayed for 5 weeks back in 1999. We were right down the road from the capital city, Paramaribo, and where we stayed didn't have running water, and we slept under mosquito nets, as well. They spoke Dutch, but also a language called "talki talki." The food was delicious, and the local people were very kind. At that time, there wasn't a large amount of tourism, so when we went to buy some souvenirs, there was one store that had a few items available.
