It originally derived from prison culture and slavery even in pretty sure since they weren’t given belts and whatnot for “safety reasons” and then was adopted by mainly African Americans as a form of counter culture. And then white people discovered it and just stole it and called it their own like every other fashion trend in America right now basically.
