For most of history, borders followed rivers, mountains, coastlines, and the territories of local kingdoms. But during the colonial era, many borders were simply drawn on maps by distant governments, often with little regard for the people living there. That’s why some countries, especially in Africa and parts of the Middle East, have borders that look like they were drawn with a ruler. History leaves clues everywhere.
