Project: Techtember Day 13 How to land your first job as an IT fresh graduate? Honestly, nung fresh grad ako, hindi naman ako yung pinaka-magaling sa programming. Hindi ako yung tipong alam lahat ng programming languages or sobrang lalim na agad ng technical knowledge. Pero may mga bagay akong ginawa para ihanda yung sarili ko. First, I prayed. Before everything else, I prayed for direction and for the right opportunity. Kasi kahit gaano ka ka-prepared, may mga bagay talaga na hindi mo kayang kontrolin. “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Proverbs 16:3 Then I focused on three things. One, I learned how to market myself. Hindi ibig sabihin na kailangan mong magyabang. You just need to know how to communicate your value. If you’re a fresh grad, wala ka pang years of experience. So you have to show what you do have. Projects. Thesis. OJT. School activities. Leadership experience. Even the things you learned outside school. I learned how to present those experiences in a way that shows what I can contribute. Two, I developed my leadership and communication skills. Programming isn’t always about sitting in front of a computer and writing code. You’ll work with people. You’ll explain problems. You’ll ask questions. You’ll work with teammates. You’ll sometimes have to take the lead. So kahit hindi pa ako technically strong sa lahat, I made sure I could communicate, work with people, and take responsibility. And three, I made sure I understood programming, instead of trying to memorize everything. I didn’t try to learn every programming language. I focused on understanding the basics. How does the code work? How do you solve a problem? How does a database connect to an application? Why did something break? Once you understand the fundamentals, mas madali nang matutunan yung ibang technologies along the way. And that’s honestly how I approached my first job. I wasn’t the best programmer in the room. But I knew how to learn. I knew how to communicate. I knew how to present myself. And I understood enough of the fundamentals to keep improving. So if you’re a fresh grad right now and feeling like “Hindi pa ako magaling,” don’t count yourself out. You don’t have to know everything before you start. Prepare yourself, know your strengths, improve your weaknesses, and most importantly, don’t forget to pray.
