When we talk about insecurity in Nigeria, we must be honest enough to address the matter from different angles. Many times, when people are frustrated with the state of the nation, they look for one group to blame. Some blame the government. Some blame religious leaders. Anger alone does not change policy. Social media outrage alone does not remove bad governance. Citizens must become politically aware, register to vote, understand candidates, ask serious questions, reject vote-buying, and stop defending bad leaders because of tribe, religion, personal gain, or party loyalty. I have said this before: Nigeria often behaves like a country of bullies, where the biggest bully wins. This bullying spirit shows up everywhere. It shows up in politics, where people use power to intimidate others. It shows up in business, where people cheat others and call it smartness. It shows up online, where people insult and attack anyone who disagrees with them. This is why we must start looking inward. Nigeria is not only the police, the army, the governors, and the president. Nigeria is also the family unit. Nigeria is the father who teaches his child to lie. Nigeria is the mother who celebrates money without asking questions. Nigeria is the voter who collects money on election day. Nigeria is the religious person who prays in the morning and cheats in the afternoon. Nigeria is the community that protects criminals because they are “our people.” The political leadership of a nation is often a reflection of the citizens. Leaders do not fall from the sky. They come from homes, schools, churches, mosques, communities, businesses, and social systems. If our homes produce people without values, our politics will eventually be filled with people without values. If our families teach children to fear poverty more than they fear dishonesty, the nation will keep producing leaders who can steal without shame. The work of rebuilding Nigeria must enter our homes. It must enter our schools. It must enter our churches and mosques. It must enter our businesses. It must enter our politics. It must enter our daily choices. A better country will require better citizens. DSA!
