This is Numbers 15:32–36. A man gathers sticks on the Sabbath. The people bring him to Moses because they do not know what should happen to him. God says the man must die, and the whole community stones him outside the camp. I used to know how to explain this. Sabbath law. Covenant context. Israel’s holiness. Obedience to God. But explanation is not the same as moral justification. If this story were in any other religion, I would have called it barbaric.
