@the_control_code: He hit her until she couldn’t leave. Then we called it her choice. There’s a group of people with more brain injuries than every NFL player and combat veteran combined. They’re not athletes. They’re not soldiers. They’re women — and we never once looked at their brains. We built a whole science to protect men’s heads: helmets, baseline testing, concussion protocols, hearings in Congress. The people with more of those injuries than all of it combined get no protocol, no baseline, not one screening question. So the injury goes unfound — and that same injury steals the exact machinery leaving requires: memory, planning, follow-through. He breaks the escape route from the inside. Two cages. One built around her, one built into her. Then we ask why she didn’t just go. Don’t take my word for it. Look it up. Researchers Lifshitz, Crabtree-Nelson and Kozlowski estimate women sustain eleven to twelve times more brain injuries from partner violence than soldiers and athletes combined — about 1.6 million a year in American women alone. The Ohio State and Ohio Domestic Violence Network study found 81 percent of survivors seeking help had a head injury. Dr. Kristen Dams-O’Connor at Mount Sinai autopsied the brains and found damage that may be at least as disabling as a football or combat injury. She’s the one who said a woman who stays may simply not have the brain function left to plan her way out — and newer research from Makovec Knight finds those same changes raise the risk of even more abuse. #thecontrolcode #coercivecontrol #domesticviolenceawareness #narcissisticabuse #thatsmywhy

Here's a stat that broke something open for me: there's a study that followed women who survived intimate partner violence for three years. The women who were hit AND controlled psychologically recovered — anxiety, depression, PTSD symptoms all went down over time. The women who were ONLY controlled psychologically, never hit, showed no recovery. Three years later, nothing had moved. The group with less violence had the worse outcome. Read that again. Here's why I think that happens. If he hits you, you have something to point to outside yourself. The bruise isn't your fault. People can see it, name it, validate it as abuse — including you. You get to direct your anger at him. But if it's just control, isolation, gaslighting, humiliation — there's no mark to hold up as proof. So your brain does what it always does when there's no external cause available: it goes looking for an internal one. You start asking what YOU did wrong instead of naming what he did to you. That loop is brutal to break, because you're not healing from a memory of him — you're healing from a belief about yourself he spent years building. "At least he never hit me" might be one of the most dangerous sentences a woman can say to herself. Emotional abuse isn't the lesser version. In a lot of cases, it's the one you never fully put down.

my daughter was just told by a judge that asking for spousal support was not important, she has money. She is living off loans trying for over a year to get the marital assets she is entitled to. she was told the financial difficulty she is going through is her fault because it was her choice to divorce. her other choice was to stay and die.

My trainer was teaching us about strangulation. And said for every athlete with a concussion, there are 5,500 women with one due to abuse. UGH.

Now let’s add the fact that data shows that verbal abuse causes the same brain damage as physical contact. We are getting double slammed.

Abuse causes brain damage. Even without physical injuries. I am permanently damaged from a lifetime of abuse starting in childhood.

I often wonder who my mom was before my dad started abusing her. Once he started abusing her, everything started going downhill for her. She started gaining massive amounts of weight, her depression was unmanageable, and she lost her mobility to the point where I was taking care of her as a teenager. She left him when I was 10 years old, but it continued long after that. She met my step father a few years later and he treated her much better, but the damage was done. She died at 46, just 14 years after she left him. Now I have my own psychological issues from witnessing him abuse her.

Oxygen deprivation from strangulation is also a brain injury. I’m doing the work NOW to heal my nervous system so if i do end up with dementia or Alzheimer’s i hopefully don’t live in the trauma he built. It’s been 30 years and he has still got a grip on me. I can feel his vile fingers and his fists.

We need to teach girls how to identify abuse at the earliest stage. We also need better resources for women to be able to leave in a safe way.

I’ve been a DV Advocate for 10+ years and can attest this is very accurate. Our clients with PTSD and TBI have significant challenges being able to sustain jobs, parenting and case planning because of the affects from their mental health.

AND THEN we have the AUDACITY to act like higher rates of “Alzheimer’s” in women are just bad luck, genetics, or anomalies.

I've experienced both. One who was extremely physically abusive and another who very mentally abusive. I've said for years the physical abuse wasn't as bad as the mental abuse. I never understood the exact reason before but I know the mental abuse screwed me up more. Atleast with the physical abuse it was tangent, it had lasting physical proof and It could be seen and physically felt. The mental abuse had me spiraling unable to explain properly to people or even trust what I thought to be true, I started to belive I was crazy and making everything up.
