free houses are common in japan but they have a decent chunk of yearly taxes and obligations, like not being able to resell for some time, have to renovate certain things, have to maintain the house etc

If I'd get such an opportunity I wouldn't even care, immediately move to Japan, learn Japanese, take care of the house and its surroundings even planting plants. it's so good. Also because of the size of the house it could even be a small traditional hotel (not sure what's the exact name for that). That place would give home, food and even money.
