You do realize the purpose of putting a cast iron pan in a fire is to burn the grease build up of the pan right? The rust has to be wire scrubbed off and re season the pan. What’s the purpose of this?

You don't want to pull it out. You want to leave it till the fire burns out. And cools completely
Don't drench it. Let it burn out and cool slowly.

Do not ever do that. You damage the cast iron, you warp. The cast iron and the cast iron will never hold seasoning again. Do not do this. I am a cast iron collector I do not buy any cast iron that's been thrown in the fire

The best is when you have a big old bonfire. You throw your cast iron in about the bottom quarter. And everything else piled on top of it lighted up that night, and then you wait till it's cold to ash, is the next day and dig it all out that works the best for cleaning all the c*** off of it. Now, if you're looking to get rid of the rust, the best way to get rid of rust is electrolysis. Big old tub of water and a battery charger, and an old piece of steel or other cast.Iron, actually, I use old broken camshafts, work great too

It’s supposed to get red hot. Then U need to scrub it. With steel wool. To get the rust off Then oil it it with lard or cooking grease.

just use some sand paper and then salt and a potato to scrub it clean then season it. what you are doing you run the risk of shocking the skillet to make it Crack

You cannot burn rust of cast-iron. It is scientifically impossible. Rust is oxidized iron. Temperature has no effect on it.
