It’s called Socratic questioning— used by lawyers. Super helpful!

Hey.Ebeth :
If you have kids and want to teach them without badmouthing the narcissist do Fact/Opinion games. When someone on the radio said the best restaurant is down the street I’d ask the kiddos is that a fact or opinion! They got super into it and developed their own discernment.

I use the grey rock method. Stay detatched and don’t take any bait. Be neutral/kind, but say as little as possible and react as little as possible. Don’t share any personal information or opinions. If in doubt, just say “okay” or “I see what you’re saying” without elaborating. They will get dissatisfied with trying unsuccessfully to lure you into reactivity.

I use “asked and answered” to teach my child that once I’ve said no to something, asking more times will not change the answer.

JUST APPLIED THE FIRST ONE!! WHY WAS HE SO MAD ABT IT? he immediately told me to stop using “therapy speak”. I asked what the therapy term was. 🤣he did not answer, instead deviated by asking his question again. I asked again what was the therapy speak term because I know I didn’t use any. he was like “u asked clarifying questions 3 times. this is smth u picked up in therapy. it’s what they teach you in conflict management”.

Another is humor. I used to write jokes ahead of time for when the argument happened.

The phrase "This isn't a hypothetical situation so answering the hypothetical you just presented would derail the situation, can we stay grounded in the sotuation"

every. single. time. Evidence has been assumed, (ex. "I must be a horrible person.", "Sorry, if I'm just a waste of your time", etc.) I just simply reverse uno and say, "I'm sorry you feel that way."

Not caring about what people you've barely met think about you really gets them too. I annoyed the hell out of my ex because he'd throw out the "so and so thinks..." Why would I care what your friend I've met twice thinks of me?
