An Unexpected Discovery The other day I told you I might be heading back to Thetford for some special celebrations. Well, I did. While attending an interesting library talk about Punjabi history in the town, I learnt that the final resting place of the last Maharajah of the Sikh Empire was just a few miles away in Elveden. It seemed too good an opportunity to miss. Although I had been told about it, walking around the peaceful churchyard of St Andrew and St Patrick Church, I was still taken aback to find the graves of Maharajah Duleep Singh, his wife, Maharani Bamba, and their young son. It’s not something you expect to discover in a quiet Suffolk village. The Last Maharajah Duleep Singh became Maharajah of the Sikh Empire at the age of five. Following the Anglo-Sikh Wars, the British annexed the Punjab in 1849 and he was separated from his mother before being brought to Britain. He became a favourite of Queen Victoria, while the famous Koh-i-Noor diamond also passed into British hands. In 1863, Duleep Singh bought the 17,000-acre Elveden Estate, creating a grand country home and becoming part of local life. Despite this, he never gave up hope of returning to India and restoring his position. He died in Paris in 1893, and his body was returned to Elveden for burial. A Family Remembered pictures 3&4 Beside him lies his first wife, Maharani Bamba, who was born in Cairo to a German father and an Abyssinian (Ethiopian) mother. She became well known in the village for her charitable work. Nearby is the grave of their youngest son, Prince Albert Edward Alexander Duleep Singh, who died aged just thirteen, only a few months before his father. Today the graves remain an important place of pilgrimage for Sikhs from around the world, with flowers regularly left in tribute. The Guinness Connection The church has its own fascinating history. After Duleep Singh’s death, the Elveden Estate was bought by Edward Guinness, later the 1st Earl of Iveagh, of the famous Guinness brewing family. He funded a major enlargement of the church, creating the distinctive building seen today by joining the original medieval church with a new extension. A Quiet Corner of History Visiting Elveden after spending the day learning about Punjabi history gave the visit an added significance. It’s a reminder that British and Sikh history are closely connected, often in places where you least expect it. A quiet churchyard in rural Suffolk tells a story of empire, exile, faith and family that continues to draw visitors from around the world. Special mention to @🧿🌙✨👑 Ree who helped me with the local history! #church #architecture #religion #graves #historytok

Commented on@oldschoolwayz’s post Ever since Gypsy got out of prison on December 28, 2023, it’s been a life of being in the spotlight and interviews. But people who see her out in the real world know differently. They don’t see her with Ken and a baby. Instead, they see her around the bayou in Cut-Off, Louisiana living with her family, sometimes hanging out with a group of other women. Ken is only seen in pictures and videos. People see him in the Boca Raton area in Florida by himself, without Gypsy and without any baby. But on screen, it’s entirely different. They make it clear they are one happy little family.
