Heartbreaking so many laws were written only because blood was shed. Shouldn’t take several deaths to make a change:(

matthew shepard is my grandpa’s cousin. if he was still alive he would be my only living queer family member (we’re close to 2nd ans 3rd cousins in this family). i would maybe feel less out of place growing up queer in this family. rest in peace Matthew. you deserve sunshine. 💜

growing up in Laramie as a closeted lesbian in the 2000's was very difficult. Matthew's story will always be honored. He lives on, he is a testimony of love and acceptance ♥️

I was a teenager when this happened. It scared me to my core. Being from a small town I was genuinely afraid this was just what was going to happen to me eventually. I'm so glad I learnt that it wasn't... that moving to a larger city I became not only accepted but celebrated for who I was.

Matthew would be so proud of how far we’ve come. I know he’s smiling down on pride and on everyone who is able to love each other out loud.

My husband and I visited that spot when we drove through Wyoming to pay our respects. It’s a heartbreaking place that reminds you of how far we’ve come but how much further we still need to go too ❤️🩹

I grew up in Cheyenne. And every October and June I think of him, I think of my home, how far Wyoming has come and how far it needs to go. I hope one day the state can be a safe place for every queer person trying to find themselves

Laramie Pride might be one of the most important Pride celebrations in the country considering this context. I think of Matthew often and I hope his family has found peace.

I had the privilege of seeing his mother speak at my college in 2007. The emotion in the room was thick and nearly everyone cried. We all felt her strength and pride in her son.

“ one day we may finally realize the depth of gods love, even those who hate in his name” Lauren J McGillis on the death of Mathew… I remember this quote from 1998, I was 18, I’m 46 now…

so my oldest is named matthew and he was due on what would of been matthew shepards 30th birthday and about a week before i had him i abruptly changed his name from what i chose to matthew. i can’t explain why, i i was out walking and i was just like yeah his name is gonna be matthew. i didn’t give it a second thought until many years later when i saw when matthew shepards birthday was and remembered when i was pregnant with my son.

I was made to read the Laramie project in high school. To this day it’s one of the most impactful books I’ve ever read. His name and story and never left my mind 💔

My high school theatre class decided to do The Laramie Project in like 2010/2011 and it was really powerful back then. I’m honored to have been a part of it. It stuck with me.
