Historical Context Note: These writings were published in 1909, but the counsel was given during the post-Civil War Reconstruction era in the American South. When White writes "The time has not come for this," she was addressing the practical realities of conducting evangelistic work in a deeply segregated and hostile post-war environment, advising against social agitation that she believed would result in violent backlash and halt the church's missionary work. The quote on page 223 is specifically addressing the systemic moral degradation caused by the institution of slavery.

It's Ellen White's counsel to the Seventh-day Adventist Church on race relations in the post-slavery American South. Key points: read the context of it. She urges the church not to let racial tensions and "the problem of the color line" become a source of division or wasted energy: "We are to avoid entering into contention over the problem of the color line. If this question is much agitated, difficulties will arise that will consume much precious time to adjust." She acknowledges the legacy of slavery makes the situation complex, noting that because Black Americans were "so long... under the curse of slavery... it is a difficult problem to know how they should now be treated." She calls for faith and trust in God to guide the church through this, stressing that "We must have faith in God—faith that He will arrange matters in a way that will enable us to work successfully." She emphasizes that significant resources, time, and unified effort are needed for ministry among Black communities, calling on members to confess their sins and work together: "It will take money and earnest, persevering effort to do that which needs to be done among the colored people."
