 Everything goes dark the moment the camera is covered, yet bright specks and streaks suddenly begin appearing across the screen. Those flashes are not visual effects or image noise from low light conditions. The phone is placed directly against a small radioactive check source, preventing normal light from reaching the camera sensor. Even in complete darkness, high energy particles emitted by the source can pass into the sensor and deposit energy directly into individual pixels. Because a camera sensor is designed to detect electrical signals created by light, it interprets these particle strikes as brilliant flashes. Each white dot or streak is the result of ionizing radiation interacting with the silicon inside the camera, creating a visible record of an otherwise invisible process.
