Walking with a Hip Drop? It Could Be Trendelenburg Gait. Trendelenburg gait is a common walking pattern caused by weakness of the gluteus medius and other hip abductor muscles. Normally, when you stand on one leg during walking or running, your hip abductors contract to keep your pelvis level. If theyโre too weak, the pelvis drops on the opposite side, creating the characteristic โhip dropโ or side-to-side sway. This isnโt just a walking issueโit can affect your entire lower body. Weak hip abductors allow the femur to move into excessive internal rotation and adduction during weight-bearing. This changes the mechanics of the knee and could lead to knee pain as well. Try the exercises in this video: โ 3 sets of 15 repetitions โ Hold each rep for 3โ5 seconds โ Focus on slow, controlled movement โ Challenge yourself while maintaining proper technique.
