@goodyfeedbluecats: An AI model has suddenly been banned in the US because it's too powerful and could post a security threat; here's what happened! Claude Fable 5, Anthropic’s newest and most powerful publicly available Claude model, was launched on 9 June 2026. Fable 5 wasn’t just any normal Claude update. It was part of Anthropic’s new Mythos-class family, a level above its Opus models. Back in April, Anthropic had only released the first Mythos-class model to a limited group of cyberdefenders and critical infrastructure partners, because its advanced cybersecurity abilities could be misused if released widely. Fable 5 was supposed to be the safer public version: same powerful underlying model, but with safeguards that would automatically fall back to Claude Opus 4.8 for certain sensitive cybersecurity, biology and chemistry requests. So, what happened? Just days later, Anthropic announced that access had become unavailable after the US government issued an export-control directive. According to Anthropic, the order requires it to suspend access to both Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 for all foreign nationals, whether they are inside or outside the United States. Because of that, Anthropic said it had to abruptly disable the models for all customers to ensure compliance, even though other Claude models remain unaffected. The US government’s concern appears to be national security, especially the possibility that Fable 5 could be “jailbroken” to bypass safeguards and help identify software vulnerabilities. Anthropic disagrees with the decision, saying it was only given verbal evidence of a narrow, non-universal jailbreak risk, and arguing that such a standard could affect the entire frontier AI industry if applied broadly. So in simple terms, Claude Fable 5 was not banned because it suddenly became illegal for everyone to use in the usual sense. It was pulled offline because the US government is treating access to certain advanced AI models like a national-security export-control issue, especially for non-Americans. Anthropic says it believes there has been a misunderstanding and is working to restore access, but for now, Fable 5 and Mythos 5 are unavailable. Some people think this has become the perfect marketing campaign for Claude Fable 5, since it shows how powerful it is. However, if you've used it, you'd know how good it is: when it was live, users showed how they develop working websites, 3D games or even feature-rich apps with just one prompt.
