Sofi :
Reducing calories isn’t always the answer.
Your body burns a large amount of energy just to stay alive, breathing, circulating blood, digesting food, repairing cells. This is called the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), and for most teenagers it’s easily 1,200–1,800 calories per day before adding any physical activity. Cutting calories too low means you’re not even covering those basic needs.
Why fasting is harmful for minors:
- Brain development requires steady glucose for focus and learning.
- Growth depends on consistent nutrients for bones and muscles.
- Hormonal balance can be disrupted, affecting puberty and menstrual cycles.
- Energy levels drop, leading to fatigue, irritability, and weaker immunity.
And here’s the paradox: reducing calories too much can actually make you gain weight. When the body senses starvation, metabolism slows down, muscle mass is lost, and fat storage increases as a survival mechanism.
No hate, med student here 🫶🏼💕
