It seems that only in The Gambia some opposition politicians claim that they do not believe in numbers or the size of a party's membership, yet they are simultaneously calling for all opposition parties to unite in a coalition. If numbers do not matter, why is there a need for a coalition in the first place? What message are they trying to send to the public?
Democracy is based on the principle of majority support. In every election, the side that earns the support of the majority of voters wins. Therefore, it appears contradictory to say that numbers do not matter while seeking alliances to increase electoral strength. Gambians deserve a clear explanation of this apparent inconsistency.
