2017 Chinese drama The Call of Love In a impoverished mining town in Shandong, 5-year-old Sun Jiabao lives a financially tight but loving life until tragedy strikes twice in rapid succession: His mother becomes severely ill and passes away. Desperate to pay off medical debts, his father takes a dangerous job in a local mine, only to be crushed in a horrific mining accident. He survives but is left permanently paralyzed from the waist down. The local mining company dodges accountability, leaving the family with virtually no compensation. Jiabao’s father, overwhelmed by despair, grief, and the feeling that he is now a useless burden to his toddler son, tries to starve himself to death. When 5-year-old Jiabao realizes his father has given up on life. In a tear-jerking scene, the toddler cries, begs his father to eat, and promises that he will take care of everything. From that day on, Jiabao effectively becomes the head of the household. The middle of the film is a brutal look at his daily survival: The Routine: Jiabao stands on a small wooden stool just to reach the stove to cook basic porridge. He learns to change his father’s bedpans, massage his paralyzed legs to prevent muscle atrophy, and clean their crumbling home. The Struggle for Food: With no money, Jiabao collects plastic bottles for pennies and scavenges for leftover vegetables at the local market. The Heartbreak: At one point, Jiabao gets terribly sick with a high fever. Instead of being cared for, he has to crawl out of bed to ensure his father is fed, showing a level of filial piety that deeply shames the healthy adults around them. Jiabao's absolute refusal to give up slowly catches the attention of his community. His schoolteachers notice a brilliant, hardworking boy who is constantly exhausted and arriving with bruised hands. Local neighbors, who initially stayed away out of their own poverty or apathy, are moved to tears by the child's relentless spirit. They begin stepping in with small acts of kindness—dropping off sacks of flour, helping fix their leaking roof, and looking out for the boy.
