The double standards are breath taking. That cop is obviously intoxicated and if the other cop saw a civilian in that state they would arrest them on the spot. No chances, no options to just go home. End of story.

why was he willing to let him go home if that was a civilian he would be in cuffs

Shouldn’t he be arrested for driving under the influence?

I’m usually the first one to call out bad police work when I see it, but I’ve got to give credit where it’s due here.
What that officer did was real emotional intelligence under extreme pressure. You can see he wasn’t just “letting him go” — he was actively de-escalating, redirecting, and keeping him away from anything that could turn deadly while trying to move the situation toward medical help.
The difference in this case is that they aren’t strangers, they’re colleagues and clearly have a relationship. That kind of friendship doesn’t weaken the response—it actually adds another layer of control because there’s trust and familiarity in a moment where things could’ve gone completely sideways.
He kept him talking, kept him grounded, kept pushing him toward calling his wife and going to the hospital instead of spiraling further into “it’s over” thinking.
And statistically, suicide is one of the leading causes of death in law enforcement, so when someone in that state is saying things like “I want to die” or “there’s no coming back,” that’s a real crisis moment—not just emotion.
Whether someone likes police or not, this is one of those situations where the officer’s training, communication, and restraint likely prevented something far worse.

What an amazing cop. So difficult to do this to one of your own. Must have broke his heart but great to see him do the right thing.

I thought the sober cop was scared the drunk cop might grab a gun in that room and he was just trying to get him out of there.
