"Reflections" by the alternative rock band The Neighbourhood explores the pain of a one-sided, emotionally distant relationship. The song's lyrics convey the narrator's longing for a partner who struggles to give affection, highlighting themes of heartbreak, unrequited love, and the sacrifices made for someone who does not fully reciprocate.Key Lyric ThemesEmotional Distance & Unrequited Love: The song opens with the narrator asking, "Where have you been? Do you know when you're coming back?" This highlights a partner who is physically or emotionally checked out, despite the narrator's willingness to give everything to the relationship. The "Reflection" Metaphor: In the chorus, the lyric "I see my reflection in your eyes" represents the narrator seeking confirmation of love. It captures the vulnerability of hoping the partner truly sees and cares for them in the same way, or simply mirroring the same intense emotions.Prioritizing Self-Worth: A poignant line, "I'd rather lose somebody than use somebody," signifies a moment of clarity. It means the narrator realizes the relationship is unhealthy but refuses to manipulate or exploit their partner just to keep them around.Sold My Soul: The refrain, "I sold my soul for you," emphasizes the heavy personal toll, sacrifices, and emotional investment the narrator made, ultimately questioning if it was all worth it.Fan InterpretationsWhile the band never explicitly defined the meaning, fans and critics associate the track with the bittersweet feeling of falling in love with someone while trying to let go of a broken connection.
