“My calves are small because my genetics are Well my gym bro/sis, odds are: you’re correct! 🤣but also, don’t tell me you keep bouncing every rep, train calves only high reps, or just do partials for the burn…bc then, it’s both your genetics and your stupidity ❤️ jk The funny thing is: calves are genetic, and so is everything else!l So are our biceps, calves, delts… We all have different muscle bellies, tendon lengths, insertions, structures and ultimately different potentials for how much muscle we can build. I’m 6’6”. Trust me, I’m very aware that the structure we’re given changes the way our physiques look 🫪 But somewhere along the way, we started treating calves differently. If our chest is behind, we look at our exercise selection, technique, volume and progression. If our quads suck, we start questioning our squat patterns and how we’re actually loading them. But if our calves are small? “Genetics.” We can’t change where our gastrocnemius inserts or how long our Achilles tendon is, but we can understand that the gastrocnemius crosses both the knee and ankle while the soleus only crosses the ankle. We can understand why straight-knee and bent-knee calf work aren’t exactly the same thing. We can actually control the eccentric, train through meaningful ROM, stop bouncing through our reps and track whether we’re getting stronger over time. None of that guarantees we’re all going to build ridiculous calves, thats where genetics really do matter. But that has been the entire point of this exercise-selection series. We’re never looking for the magical exercise that overrides our biology, because we know that doesn’t exist. We’re trying to understand what a muscle actually does so we can make better decisions with the biology we were given! We can’t select our genetics, but we can absolutely select how we use it! #goliathliftzz #hypertrophytraining #trainhardorgohome #bigcalves #sciencebased Studies: Kinoshita M, Maeo S, Kobayashi Y, et al. (2023). Triceps surae muscle hypertrophy is greater after standing versus seated calf-raise training. Frontiers in Physiology, 14, 1272106. Kassiano W, Costa B, Kunevaliki G, et al. (2023). Greater Gastrocnemius Muscle Hypertrophy After Partial Range of Motion Training Performed at Long Muscle Lengths. Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 37(9), 1746–1753.
