It is located approximately 1,200 light-years from Earth in the constellation Auriga and belongs to the class of "hot Jupiters" — gas giants orbiting very close to their star. The planet is approximately 1.4 times more massive than Jupiter and almost 1.8 times its radius. Due to its proximity to its star, its temperature reaches 2,200 – 2,600 °C, and a complete orbit around the star takes only about 1.1 Earth days. Enormous tidal forces have deformed the planet so much that it is no longer spherical, but elongated, almost ovoid. Furthermore, the star gradually attracts matter from the planet's atmosphere, effectively destroying it. WASP-12b is also known for its unusually low reflectivity: it absorbs over 90% of the light falling on it and is considered one of the darkest known planets. Observations show that its orbit is gradually decreasing, so within a few million years the planet will likely be completely engulfed by its star.
