The upcoming blockbuster SpaceX IPO is making headlines given its US$1.77 trillion valuation. 💸🚀 But here's how much it'll form as part of your ETF. 👇 $60. On a $100,000 portfolio. That's it. Why's that the case? SpaceX lists on 12 June but the number that matters is what's called the free float. When a company IPOs, not all of its shares are traded public. Founders and ealry investors are locked up. SpaceX's free float on listing day? Just 4.3%. For comparison's sake, Nvidia has a free float of 96% and Microsoft has one of close to 100%. The other 95.7% of SpaceX shares are locked up and will only be eligible to be sold over the next 6-12 months. Your ETF likely weights companies by their tradeable float and NOT their headline valuation. In that sense, SpaceX will have the same index impact as a 100%-float company that's valued at US$76 billion. How does that impact you as an investor in variouus index ETFs? Here's how it shakes out: 1. All-World ETF (VWRA or ACWD) - SpaceX will enter automatically and there will be about 0.04% to 0.06% of exposure within 15 days of the IPO. 2. NASDAQ-100 ETF - SpaceX will make up 0.5% to 0.7% of the ETF when it enters the index in late June and while it's not huge, it's the most significant of the three. 3. S&P 500 ETF - S&P has actually said that it will not relax its requirement for four trailing quarters of profitability. The result? The earliest possible entry for SpaceX into the S&P 500 Index is June 2027. So there you have it. The gap between the $60 reality and the US$1.77 trillion headline is the whole story.
