What does a capacity of 30,000 m³ really mean? Based on a large fuel tanker truck carrying approximately 25 m³, it is equivalent to about 1,200 tanker loads. So how is a storage tank of this size constructed? This video will give you a better understanding. The footage was recorded in November 2024. This is a 30,000 m³ external floating roof crude oil tank that our team was responsible for constructing at the time. From bottom plate installation and shell erection to floating roof fabrication, accessory installation, weld inspection, coating and final testing, the construction of a large storage tank involves multiple interconnected stages. Common external floating roof configurations include the single-deck pontoon-type floating roof and the double-deck floating roof. The roof floats directly on the surface of the crude oil and rises or falls with the liquid level inside the tank. However, a crude oil storage tank is not necessarily an external floating roof tank. Depending on tank capacity, product properties, vapor pressure, project specifications and operating environment, crude oil may also be stored in a fixed roof tank. Some fixed roof tanks are additionally equipped with an internal floating roof beneath the permanent roof. An external floating roof tank does not have a permanent fixed roof covering the entire tank, and its floating roof is exposed to the atmosphere. A fixed roof tank, by comparison, has a permanent roof covering the tank. This is the most easily recognized visual difference between the two designs.
