Does anyone else feel like this week has been a long one? It’s almost Friday and instead of celebrating First Friday or Friday Eve, we may be feeling fatigued! 🥱 Below you will see the ICD-10 codes for Other Malaise, Chronic Fatigue, Fatigue(unspecified), and Post-Viral Fatigue Syndrome (our new 2023 code). If you are confused about Post-Viral Fatigue Syndrome just know that it is referring to the lingering effects of a viral illness such as COVID and if it is documented as being related to COVID then remember to also report the ICD-10 code U09.9(Post COVID-19 condition, unspecified) in addition to G93.31. It’s also important to know the difference between Malaise and Fatigue. Malaise refers to a more physical feeling such as a feeling of physical discomfort with a general weakness of your body. Whereas fatigue can be both physical and mental with a lack of energy and motivation. Malaise and Fatigue may occur at the same time and can be coded as either R53.81 or R53.83. Also, take note that Chronic Fatigue is fatigue that has been persistent and reoccurring. Think of it as a cough that you randomly started having but quickly resolved on its own. We would code Cough, unspecified R05.9, but if you’ve had a persistent cough and it hasn’t gone away it becomes a Chronic cough and we would code R05.3. Remember! However, that fatigue and malaise are signs and symptoms and if associated or an integral part of a condition should not be assigned as an additional code and we must code our final or definitive confirmed diagnosis. As always I hope you find this beneficial! #tired #fatigue #malaise #fridayeve #firstfriday #friday #icd10 #icd10cm #medicalcoding #medicalcoder #doctor #signsandsymptoms #diagnosis #thursday #learn #educate #onlinemedicalcoding #medicalcodinglife #cpc #aapc
