@moments.in.time0: POV: YOU ARE IN BIRMINGHAM IN 1901 In 1901, Birmingham was known as the City of a Thousand Trades. Unlike cities dominated by one major industry, Birmingham contained an extraordinary network of specialist workshops. Different businesses manufactured jewellery, buttons, steel pen nibs, brass fittings, locks, tools, guns, coffin handles, and countless other metal goods. Production often took place inside cramped workshops hidden behind ordinary streets and back-to-back housing courts. One worker might stamp a tiny metal component before passing it to another specialist for shaping, polishing, decorating, or assembly. Birmingham became one of the world’s most important centres for steel pen nib production. Its Jewellery Quarter contained hundreds of workshops, while the Gun Quarter divided firearm production between craftsmen specializing in individual components such as barrels, locks, actions, and wooden stocks. Before gun barrels could be sold, they were tested at the Birmingham Proof House using powerful charges designed to expose dangerous weaknesses. Finished goods travelled through Birmingham’s extensive canal network before being sold across Britain and exported around the world. Even Birmingham’s more unexpected industries became internationally significant, including the manufacture of decorative metal fittings for coffins. Behind this extraordinary productivity were long hours, dangerous machinery, industrial smoke, and thousands of adults performing highly repetitive, specialized work. Almost anything made from metal could probably be made somewhere in Birmingham. #POV #History #Birmingham #uk #historytok

I'd love to go back in time for a day. I wouldn't like that my 'today's essentials' wouldn't be available, but I can guarantee my mental health would go due to the freedom they had.

My Greatgrandmother and Greatgrandfather lived on a barge in Gas Street and my Grandfather was born in St Martins back to back houses. Although I am only in my 60s I lived with my grandparents as a small child and the factories were still in action and I remember my Grandmother walking up the hill home smelling of the factory. I feel privileged to have been raised in the floodlights of St Andrews ❤️
