I think energetics played a role as well. Neanderthals needed more daily calories then us. Not just because it was colder but how they were built. Those large muscle attachments, the size of their bones, their large brain etc demanded more calories. With competition for the same basic wild game resources when we arrived they were doomed.we could survive with less

But can we really say "we" won out when almost all modern humans have Neanderthal DNA? Neanderthals and Sapiens both passed their DNA on, both have survived in us.
