🤠🎸 THROWBACK THURSDAY 🎸🤠 Today we're throwing it ALL the way back and paying tribute to one of the greatest legends country music has ever seen — the one and only TOBY KEITH! 🇺🇸🦅 Born Toby Keith Covel on July 8, 1961, in Clinton, Oklahoma, this man was country to his core from day one. Before he ever stepped foot on a stage in Nashville, Toby was out there working in the Oklahoma oil fields as a derrick hand, playing semi-pro football for the Oklahoma City Drillers, and even working as a rodeo hand. 🏈🐂⛽ The man lived the blue-collar life he sang about — and that's what made him so real. Toby picked up a guitar at just 8 years old after his grandmother owned a supper club where he was exposed to live music. By 16, he had written his first song, and from that moment on, there was no turning back. 🎶 In 1993, Toby burst onto the country music scene with his debut single "Should've Been a Cowboy" — and it didn't just do well, it became the most-played country song of the entire 1990s! 🤯🔥 Talk about making an entrance! That song hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and set the tone for one of the most dominant careers in country music history. From there, the hits just kept on coming. We're talking about anthems like "How Do You Like Me Now?!", "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)", "Beer for My Horses" (featuring the legendary Willie Nelson 🐴), "I Love This Bar", "As Good As I Once Was", and of course the party classic "Red Solo Cup" 🥤 — a song that crossed over and became a worldwide phenomenon! Over his incredible career, Toby sold over 40 million albums worldwide 💿 and had 20 number 1 hit singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. He won multiple ACM Awards, CMT Awards, American Music Awards, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2015 🏆. He also received the National Medal of Arts in 2023 from President Biden, one of the highest honors an artist can receive in the United States. 🎖️ But Toby wasn't just about the music. He was a proud patriot who made multiple tours overseas to perform for U.S. troops through the USO, completing 11 tours to the Middle East and beyond. 🫡🇺🇸 His song "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue" became an anthem for military families across the country after 9/11, inspired by the loss of his own father, H.K. Covel, who was a veteran. Toby was also a savvy businessman. He launched his own record label, Show Dog Nashville, opened a chain of "I Love This Bar & Grill" restaurants, and even had his own mezcal brand called Wild Shot. 🥃 The man knew how to hustle on and off the stage. Beyond his career, Toby had a huge heart. He was deeply involved in philanthropy, founding the Toby Keith Foundation and opening OK Kids Korral, a cost-free home for families of children battling cancer in Oklahoma City. 💛 He quietly helped countless families during some of their darkest days. Tragically, Toby was diagnosed with stomach cancer in late 2021 and fought a courageous battle before passing away on February 5, 2024, at the age of 62. 💔 The country music world — and honestly, the entire world — lost a giant that day. But his music, his legacy, and his spirit will live on forever. Rest easy, Big Dog Daddy. There will never be another one like you. 🕊️⭐ If you love classic country throwbacks and want to keep honoring legends like Toby Keith, make sure you follow us and check out Tailgate Country for more of the best country content, vibes, and music that speaks to your soul! 🚜🍻🎶 Drop your favorite Toby Keith song in the comments — let's hear it! 👇🔥 #TobyKeith #fyp #TBT #countrymusic #throwbackthursday
