The concept of instrumentality is very interesting to me because it’s forcing everyone together into one diverging point of emotion and vulnerability. One of my favorite nge scenes is when Shinji is the one yelling asuka’s insecurities back to her, revealing how they have a similar fear of abandonment, and desire/fixation on their relations to others and image of themselves (both truly wanting to be loved in the end.) which is why Shinji overcoming instrumentality by accepting those parts of himself he is afraid or ashamed of is so beautiful- because he no longer is at endless war with himself. To improve, he has to accept the ugliness of being a self.

One of my favourite details of Eva from the early episodes was Shinji appearing to constantly repeat the same song or segment of his tape, because his anxiety repels new things, seeking comfort in what he knows and what is “safe” for him

im not sure Shinji fully accepts himself at the end, to me, EoE ends with the possibility of selfhood rather than its achievement. rejecting instrumentality is the leap, but actually becoming a self isa process that begins afterwards, like the beach scene feels deliberately ambiguous because Shinji chooses existence, yet hes still carrying the same fears and contradictions that defined him throughout

Something about Eva to take in consideration it's not always just the themes that the narrative explores and executes or even just the concept of literary quality and inner philosophy in evas story. People tend to forget that when you talk about a work or a piece of media your taking all that's attributed to that work not just including the literary quality but it includes the hard work, dedication, external meaning, art style, and well OST and score probably the second most important thing when it comes to talk about how good a work is Eva is a work that practically perfects or well not even perfects but breaks the boundaries of what you can do for a work it pushed the limits of anime budget in the 90's and broke the boundaries of how psychology and art can convey in anime and to talk about the amount music shiro sagisu and hikaru utada put for us in the rebuilds is absolutely extraordinary anno pushed the absolute limits of himself and animation just to fully complete and conclude his magnum opus, I feel like when it comes to breaking down the definition for the greatest piece of fiction or at least one of the greatest it is one that excels in all types of philosophical depth, realism, artistic craftsmanship, thematic density, emotional impact, enjoyability, symbolic resonance, cultural longevity and overall experiential completeness. And I don't think Eva just excels in that definition quite literally as I said before is denting the border besides since I'm currently on twin peaks which is relatively doing the same rn I have not yet seen a work that has went beyond excelling at nearly everything. You can say Drakenier, umineko, or comp star wars does that but I feel like there is just one attribute to them that they somehow fall shallow in and you just can't find this in Eva.
