Scipio Africanus (236–183 BCE): He was the actual Roman general and conqueror. He defeated Hannibal Barca at the Battle of Zama in 202 BCE, which ended the Second Punic War and secured Rome's dominance over the Western Mediterranean. Because of his conquest, the Roman Senate awarded him the honorific title "Africanus" (meaning "the African" or "Conqueror of Africa"). ~ He was named after the land not the other way around.
