Ah, I always need to bring up Tom of Finland, when talking about the leather community. Touko Laaksonen, aka Tom of Finland was one if not the most influential artists, who depicted gay leather community. When it comes to leather he was inspired by the wild one movie and after that his artwork inspired the community and the community inspired his art. It was a two way relationship. Laaksonen redefined what a masculine gay man can be, and bravely used images of a “perfect finnish man” to create illustrations of queer fantasies. He was and his work still is a big part of the subculture and he’s a huge queer icon, especially to us finns! It’s hard to even describe, how much this man and his work means to Finnish queer community, who haven’t always had much representation.
