Here is the pest solution I have been using for the last 7 years! 🚫🕷️✨ I love all living things but, there’s a place for them and it’s NOT inside my home, chicken coop or run. Since we don’t want to use harmful chemicals around our chickens (or our family!) I mix up a batch of what I call “spider spray” and spray it all around my home and our chicken coop. What you’ll need: • Sprayer • Orange & Peppermint essential oil (for the spiders) • Thyme essential oil (to prevent red mites) • Distilled water (makes the solution last longer) 💧Mix about 10 drops of each oil in 1 gallon of water and add it to your sprayer ✅ Spray the solution in all the places you see cobwebs and inside crevices where spiders like to hide 🔁 Spray troublesome areas bi-weekly If you have a large infestation it could take a few rounds of spraying for the spiders to move on out. Once they’re controlled, continue spraying problematic areas every month so they don’t come back. ⚠️🍊Essential oils are generally safe to use around chickens as long as they are DILUTED first. Be extra cautious when using orange oil as large amounts can be toxic. Follow these guidelines when applying the spray to your coop: ✅ Remove the drinking water and food before spraying. ✅ Always dilute your oils: no more than 2 drops total per cup of water (or 30 drops per gallon of water like I did) ✅ Spray in the morning on a nice day and open the coop windows for optimal ventilation ✅ Observe your chickens for any signs of distress when introducing something new to their environment 🚫 Do not under dilute your oils. 🚫 Do not spray on the chicken’s bedding, nesting boxes or areas where they dust bathe. I opted to spray this solution on the litter shelf only because they do not spend a significant amount of time on the shelf itself. 🚫 Don’t spray the chickens! 🚫 Do not contaminate their food and water with the oils 🚫 Do not spray daily ✨ If you’d like the details for everything I used in this video, check out the 📎 in my profile! #chickencoop #pestprevention #backyardchickens #chickenkeeping #coopmaintenance #cleancoop #diycoopcleaner #diybugspray #chickenmom
