On October 24, 1959, a 7-foot-1, 258-pound rookie named Wilt Chamberlain stepped onto an NBA court for the Philadelphia Warriors. He immediately became the highest-paid player in the league with a $30,000 rookie contract, more than established stars like Bob Cousy were making, and the same amount the owner had paid to buy the entire franchise just seven years earlier. He went out and averaged 37.6 points and 27.0 rebounds per game. He led the entire league in both categories. He won MVP and Rookie of the Year in the same season. And he dragged a mediocre Warriors team from 32 wins all the way to 49 wins and the Eastern Division Finals.
